以上のようにザックリと種類を分けましたが、実際にGrammar in Useシリーズには、他にも解答なし版や旧版、25周年記念版なども存在します。ただし、これらは一般の英語学習者には無縁のものであるため、コレクターでない限りは購入する際に選択肢に入れる必要はありません。 例えば、解答なし版であれば、学校などの教材で生徒に配ることを前提に設計されています。

ということもあり、シリーズ全てのバージョンを紹介するとキリがないので、この記事ではセルフスタディ用（独学用）を前提としたバージョンの最新版を中心に紹介していきます。

Grammar in Useの選び方

どんな種類が販売されているのかを理解したところで、次にGrammar in Useシリーズの選び方について解説していきます。購入を検討されている人は、次のポイントをチェックしてください。そうすれば自分に合った1冊を選ぶことができるでしょう。

【1】現在の自分の英語レベルと将来的に目指したいレベル
【2】イギリス英語とアメリカ英語のどちらを学びたいか（アメリカ英語なら日本語版と英語版のどちらか）
【3】eBook（CD）の音源が必要か？ または答えだけでも良いのか？

以上の3つのポイントについて考えてみてください。「もし、1冊選ぶならどれ？」と言うのであれば、間違いなくイギリス英語版のIntermediate（中級）をオススメします。なぜなら、Intermediate（中級）のバランスが最良だからです。

【1】自分に合ったレベル、または目指したいレベル

イギリス英語版を選ぶ場合は、英語のスキルに応じてEssential（初級）、Intermediate（中級）、Advanced（上級）の3つのレベルから選択できます。赤・青・緑と色分けされているので。間違わずに目的の本を選べるでしょう。また、英語を学ぶときに、自身のレベルよりも少し上くらいの参考書が最も効果的です。もしくは、選ぶときのポイントに日本語で書かれた参考書を終えた後のステップとして、English Grammar in Useシリーズを使う方法などもあります。

一方、アメリカ英語版は初級と中級の2種のみです。Grammar in Useシリーズはケンブリッジ出版という海外の出版社が発行している書籍です。日本語版以外であれば、どれを選んだとしても英語を英語で学ぶことができます。そのため、原則的に英語の解説を理解するのに十分な英語力が必要であることを覚えておいてください。

個人差がありますが、一番人気のIntermediate（中級）を読み進めていくならば、TOEICで550点以上のスコアが必要だと感じます。スコアが550点以下であれば、まずはEssential（初級）から取り組むと良いでしょう。

【2】イギリス英語か？ それともアメリカ英語か？

そもそも、市販の英文法書はイギリス英語とアメリカ英語に分けることができます。Grammar in Useシリーズは、版元がケンブリッジ出版ということもあってイギリス英語が大元です。イギリス英語版とアメリカ英語版の詳細な違いは後述しますが、あまり心配する必要はないかと思います。レベルとebookやCD付きなどパターンが多いイギリス英語版から選択すると良いと思います。また、必ず新版はイギリス英語版から発売されます。

【3】eBook（CD）の音源は必要か？

「ebook（CD）付きか」、「答えのみか」で悩んでいる場合は、値段も変わってくることもあり、自身の学習スタイルと照らし合わせて考えると良いでしょう。あくまでも文法書としてのみ利用するのならば答えのみ版。リスニングやスピーキング対策としても使いたい場合は、ebook（CD）版を選ぶと良いと思います。

世界的ベストセラーであるGrammar in Useシリーズは、1985年に出版されたEnglish Grammar in Use（イギリス英語版の中級）から始まり、コミュニケーションに使える実用英文法書として、現在でも世界中の英語学習者から絶大な支持を得ています。文法についてより深いレベルで身につけたい人は、この記事を参考にしてみてください。

To the student

This book is for students who want help with English grammar. It is written for you to use without a teacher.
The book will be useful for you if you are not sure of the answers to questions like these:
What is the difference between I did and I have done?
When do we use will for the future?
What is the structure after / wish?
When do we say used to do and when do we say used to doing?
When do we use the?
What is the difference between like and as?
These and many other points of English grammar are explained in the book, and there are exercises on each point.

Level
The book is intended mainly for intermediate students (students who have already studied the basic grammar of English). It concentrates on those structures that intermediate students want to use, but that often cause difficulty. Some advanced students who have problems with grammar will also find the book useful.
The book is not suitable for elementary learners.

How the book is organised
There are 145 units in the book. Each unit concentrates on a particular point of grammar. Some problems (for example, the present perfect or the use of the) are covered in more than one unit. For a list of units, see the Contents at the beginning of the book.
Each unit consists of two facing pages. On the left there are explanations and examples; on the right there are exercises. At the back of the book there is an Answer Key for you to check your answers to the exercises (page 336).
There are also seven Appendices at the back of the book (pages 292-301). These include irregular verbs, summaries of verb forms, spelling, and American English.
Finally, there is a detailed Index at the back of the book (page 373).

How to use the book

The units are not in order of difficulty, so it is not intended that you work through the book from beginning to end. Every learner has different problems, and you should use this book to help you with the grammar that you find difficult.
It is suggested that you work in this way:
Use the Contents and/or Index to find which unit deals with the point you are interested in.
If you are not sure which units you need to study, use the Study guide on page 326.
Study the explanations and examples on the left-hand page of the unit you have chosen.
Do the exercises on the right-hand page.
Check your answers with the Key.
If your answers are not correct, study the left-hand page again to see what went wrong.
You can, of course, use the book simply as a reference book without doing the exercises.

Additional exercises
At the back of the book there are Additional exercises (pages 302-325). These exercises bring together some of the grammar points from a number of different units. For example, Exercise 16 brings together grammar points from Units 26-36. You can use these exercises for extra practice after you have studied and practised the grammar in the units concerned.

To the teacher

English Grammar in Use was written as a self-study grammar book, but teachers may also find it useful as additional course material in cases where further work on grammar is necessary.
The book will probably be most useful at middle and upper-intermediate levels (where all or nearly all of the material will be relevant), and can serve both as a basis for revision and as a means for practising new structures. It will also be useful for some more advanced students who have problems with grammar and need a book for reference and practice. The book is not intended to be used by elementary learners.

The units are organised in grammatical categories (Present and past, Articles and nouns, Prepositions etc.). They are not ordered according to level of difficulty, so the book should not be worked through from beginning to end. It should be used selectively and flexibly in accordance with the grammar syllabus being used and the difficulties students are having.

The book can be used for immediate consolidation or for later revision or remedial work. It might be used by the whole class or by individual students needing extra help. The left-hand pages (explanations and examples) are written for the student to use individually, but they may of course be used by the teacher as a source of ideas and information on which to base a lesson. The student then has the left-hand page as a record of what has been taught and can refer to it in the future. The exercises can be done individually, in class or as homework.

Alternatively (and additionally), individual students can be directed to study certain units of the book by themselves if they have particular difficulties not shared by other students in their class. Don’t forget the Additional exercises at the back of the book (see To the student).
This fifth edition of English Grammar in Use has been revised and updated. There are no new units, but some of the exercises have been rewritten or replaced.
An edition of English Grammar in Use without the key is also available. Some teachers may prefer this for use with their students.

The book is sold with or without an ebook. The ebook contains the same explanations and exercises as the book. It can be used on an iPad, Android tablet, PC or Mac. Using the ebook, students can listen to examples, save their answers, take notes, highlight text, bookmark pages and use a dictionary.

To the student

Who the book is for
Advanced Grammar in Use is for advanced students of English. It was written mainly as a self-study book, but might also be used in class with a teacher.

How the book is organised
There are 100 units in the book, each looking at a particular area of grammar. Some sections within each unit focus on the particular use of a grammatical pattern, such as will be + -ing (as in will be travelling); others explore grammatical contrasts, such as whether to use would or used to in reporting past events, or when we use except or except for.

The 100 units are grouped under a number of headings such as Tenses and The future, and you can find details of this in the Contents. Each unit consists of two pages. On the left-hand page are explanations and examples; on the right-hand page are practice exercises. The letters next to each exercise show you which section(s) of the left-hand page you need to understand to do that exercise.

At the back of the book you will find a number of further sections.
Appendices (pages 202 and 204) Two appendices provide further information about irregular
verbs and passive verb forms.

Glossary (page 205) Although terms to describe grammar have been kept to a minimum, some have been included, and you can find explanations of these terms in the Glossary.
Study planner (page 210) You can use the Study planner to help you decide which units you should study, or which parts of the Grammar reminder you should read first.

Grammar reminder (page 222) This presents examples and explanations of areas of grammar that you are likely to have studied already at earlier stages of learning English. References on the lefthand page of each unit point you to the sections of the Grammar reminder relevant to that unit. Read these sections to refresh your understanding before you start work on the more advanced grammar points in the unit.

Additional exercises (page 240) If you want further practice of grammar points, follow the references at the bottom of the right-hand page of a unit. These will tell you which of the Additional exercises to do next.

Keys (pages 251, 277 and 278) You can check your answers to the practice exercises, Study planner and Additional exercises in the keys. You will also find comments on some of the answers.
Indexes (pages 281 and 287) Use the Indexes to help you find the grammar or vocabulary you need.

How to use the book

It is not necessary to work through the units in order. If you know which grammar points you have difficulty with, go straight to the units that deal with them, using the Contents or Indexes to help you find the relevant unit. When you have found a unit to study, read through any related material in the Grammar reminder before you begin.

You can use the units in a number of ways. You might study the explanations and examples first, do the exercises on the opposite page, check your answers in the key to Exercises, and then look again at the explanations if you made any mistakes. If you just want to practise an area of grammar you think you already know, you could do the exercises first and then study the explanations for any you got wrong. You might of course simply use the book as a reference book without doing the exercises.

Corpus information
A corpus is a large collection of texts stored on a computer. In writing Advanced Grammar in Use we have worked with the Cambridge International Corpus (CIC), a multi-million word collection of real speech and writing, and the Cambridge Learner Corpus, a collection of exam answers written by students. From these corpora we can learn more about language in use, and about the common errors made by learners. Using this information, we can be sure that the grammar explanations and examples in the book reflect real language, and we can focus on problem areas for learners. We have also used the CIC to produce word boxes, listing the most common words found in particular grammar patterns.

To the teacher

Advanced Grammar in Use was written as a self-study grammar book but teachers might also find it useful for supplementing or supporting their classroom teaching. The book will probably be most useful for advanced level students for reference and practice.

No attempt has been made to order the units according to level of difficulty. Instead, you should select units as they are relevant to the syllabus that you are following with your students, or as particular difficulties arise, rather than working through from beginning to end. Alternatively, you could ask students to do the multiple-choice test in the Study planner (page 210) and focus on units that deal with areas of grammar where students are least successful.

Don’t forget to point students to the Grammar reminder (page 222). This is a reference-only section which presents basic knowledge on a number of areas of grammar. It will be useful for students to read through a section before moving on to the more advanced material in the units. At the beginning of each section of the Grammar reminder you will find information about the unit(s) it relates to.

There are many ways in which you can use the book with a class. You might, for example, present the explanations on the left-hand page of a unit, and use the exercises for classroom practice. Alternatively, you might want to begin with the exercises and refer to the left-hand page only when students are having problems. You could also set particular units or groups of units (such as those on Articles or Nouns) for self-study if individual students are having difficulties.

Another possibility might be to develop your own classroom-based activities around the explanations on the left-hand page of a unit, and then set the exercises as consolidation material for self-study. When students need further practice of grammar points from a number of different units, refer them to the Additional exercises (page 240). References at the bottom of the right-hand pages show where the relevant Additional exercises can be found.

An edition of Advanced Grammar in Use without the answers is also available, and some teachers might prefer to use it with their students.The third edition of Advanced Grammar in Use has the same comprehensive grammar coverage as previous editions, but many of its exercises have been revised and its layout made more user-friendly.

To the student (working without a teacher)

This is a grammar book for elementary students of English. There are 115 units in the book and each unit is about a different point of English grammar. There is a list of units at the beginning of the book (Contents).
Do not study all the units in order from beginning to end. It is better to choose the units that you need to do. For example, if you have a problem with the present perfect (I have been, he has done etc.), study Units 15-20.
Use the Contents or the Index (at the back of the book) to find the unit (or units) that you need.
If you are not sure which units you need to study, use the Study guide at the back of the book
Study guide (pages 271-282)

Each unit is two pages. The information is on the left-hand page and the exercises are on the right:
Study the left-hand page (information), and then do the exercises on the right-hand page.
Use the key to check your answers. The Key is on pages 283-309.
Study the left-hand page again if necessary.
Don’t forget the seven Appendices at the back of the book (pages 243-251). These will give you information about active and passive forms, irregular verbs, short forms, spelling and phrasal verbs.
There are also Additional exercises at the back of the book (pages 252-270). There is a list of these exercises on page 252

To the teacher
The most important features of this book are:
It is a grammar book. It does not deal with other aspects of the language.
It is for elementary learners. It does not cover areas of grammar which are not normally taught at elementary level.
It is a reference book with exercises. It is not a course book and is not organised progressively.
It is addressed to learners and intended for self-study.

Organisation of the book

There are 115 units in the book, each one focusing on a particular area of grammar. The material is organised in grammatical categories, such as tenses, questions and articles. Units are not ordered according to difficulty. and should therefore be selected and used in the order appropriate for the learner(s). The book should not be worked through from beginning to end.

The units are listed in the Contents and there is a comprehensive Index at the end of the book.
Each unit has the same format consisting of two facing pages. The grammar point is presented and explained on the left-hand page and the corresponding exercises are on the right. There are seven Appendices (pages 243-251) dealing with active and passive forms, irregular verbs, short forms (contractions), spelling and phrasal verbs. It might be useful for teachers to draw students’ attention to these.

At the back of the book there is a set of Additional exercises (pages 252-270). These exercises provide ‘mixed’ practice bringing together grammar points from a number of different units (especially those concerning verb forms). There are 35 exercises in this section and there is a full list on page 252.
Also at the back of the book there is a Study guide to help students decide which units to study – see page 271.

Finally, there is a key (pages 283-309) for students to check their answers to all the exercises in the book. An edition without the Study guide and Key is available for teachers who would prefer it for their students.

Level
The book is for elementary learners, i.e. learners with very little English, but not for complete beginners. It is intended mainly for elementary students who are beyond the early stages of a beginners’ course. It could also be used by low-intermediate learners whose grammar is weaker than other aspects of their English or who have problems with particular areas of basic grammar.
The explanations are addressed to the elementary learner and are therefore as simple and as short as possible. The vocabulary used in the examples and exercises has also been restricted so that the book can be used at this level.

Using the book
The book can be used by students working alone (see To the student) or as supplementary course material. In either case the book can serve as an elementary grammar book.
When used as course material, the book can be used for immediate consolidation or for later revision or remedial work. It might be used by the whole class or by individual students needing extra help and practice.
In some cases it may be desirable to use the left-hand pages (presentation and explanation) in class, but it should be noted that these have been written for individual study and reference. In most cases, it would probably be better for teachers to present the grammar point in their preferred way with the exercises being done for homework. The left-hand page is then available for later reference by the student.
Some teachers may prefer to keep the book for revision and remedial work. In this case, individual students or groups of students can be directed to the appropriate units for self-study and practice.

TOEIC®L&Rテストのリーディングパートは時間との戦いでもあります。特にパート5を早く解くことで、パート7に多くの時間を残すことができます。しかし、対策なしでスピード感を身につけることはできません。ここでは、パート5の対策本として人気の高い『TOEIC L&Rテスト 文法問題 でる1000問』を紹介します。


本書はTOEICのPart5で出題される文法問題を1049問収録した問題集です。Part5は素早く正確に問題を処理していく力が求められます。出題される問題のタイプを見極め解答する技術がたくさん紹介されています。問題集の問題を完璧にこなせるようになれば、本番でもPart5は全問正解できるようになるでしょう。

パート5の対策はパート7にも繋がってくる

TOEIC®L&Rテストのリーディングパートは、75分で合計100問を解かなければなりません。リーディングパートの内、文法問題はパート5の30問です。パート7の長文読解に時間を多く残したいため、パート5は10分程度でスピーディーに解いていきたいところです。10分で終える場合、1問あたり20秒が目安なので、日頃から問題に慣れていないと時間内に解き終えることが難しいと思います。

出題される文法の範囲は、30問中20問が品詞、動詞、関係詞、前置詞、代名詞、接続詞などの分野から出題され、残りの10問は語彙問題になります。毎回、出題範囲が限定的なので対策さえすれば得点源とすることが可能なパートでもあります。対策本の中でオススメするのは、アスクが発売している『TOEIC L&Rテスト 文法問題 でる1000問』です。

500〜900点レベルの人に最適な問題集

『文法問題 でる1000問』は、パート5の文法問題に特化した問題集です。TOEIC®頻出の文法分野を7章に分け、各章の文法の解説と基礎問題と実践問題が含まれています。左ページに問題があり、右ページに左ページの問題の解答と解説が載っています。問題を解いた後、すぐに解答と解説を確認できるのは便利ですね。

また、30問の文法模試のセット問題が13セットついています。時間を計りながら、1日に1セット解くようにしましょう。2〜3周すればパート5のスピードに慣れることができ、自分の苦手分野も明確になります。付録にセット問題をシャッフルした別冊がついているので、力試しにトライしてみるのも良いです。

とは言え、本書の文法の解説があっさりとしているので、高校レベルの基礎英文法が身についている人向けの問題集のように感じます。実際に本書の「はじめに」には、500点以上の人が使うことを想定していると書かれています。ですので、基礎英語が身についていない初心者は、中学英語や高校英語のやり直し教材から始めることをオススメします。基本的な文法を一通り理解した後に、TOEIC®対策として本書に取り組みましょう。

本書の使い方としては、第1章から第7章まで「文法の解説→トレーニング問題→実践問題」と進めていきます。2周ほどして範囲と知識を深めたら、いよいよセット問題に挑戦します。1日に1セット、時間を計りつつ取り組んでいくと、進めていくうちに苦手分野がわかってくると思います。苦手分野が明確になったら、本書の解説や総合英語の参考書を使って苦手分野を補強しましょう。このようなサイクルで学習していけば、パート5の劇的なスコアアップが望めます。

また、文法問題だけではなく、語彙問題を落としたくないという人は、常に本書でわからなかった単語をメモして覚えることも良いです。そして、本書の著者であるTEX加藤氏が執筆する金のフレーズや銀のフレーズも一緒に学習すると語彙能力が倍増します。語彙問題は覚えたら覚えた分だけ得点に直結します。

TOEIC®のパート5のスピード次第でパート7に充てることができる時間が変わります。出題される範囲が基本的に変わらないので、知識を深めることを意識しながら問題集に取り組んでいくと良いと思います。もちろん、TOEIC®は文法だけの対策で高スコアが取れる訳ではありません。リスニングとリーディングを包括的に伸ばしていくことが必要になるので、公式問題集やパート別の参考書などを使いましょう。

はじめに

本書は、「でる1000」の愛称で親しまれ、万部を超えるベストセラーとなった『新TOEICテスト 文法問題 でる 1000 問』(2015年5月刊行)を一部改訂・増補したものです。2016年5月に、TOEIL L&Rの出題形式が一部変更されたことを受け、 以下の点を修正しました (追加の30 問を除いた問題・解説は旧版と同じです)。

私の過去9年・90回(2017年5月時点)の受験経験、実際の試験や公式教材等を通じたTOEIC 研究、日々の授業の現場で得た解説のノウハウ、といったもののエッセンスをすべてつぎ込みました。問題作成にあたっては、TOEIC に精通している Ross Tulloch氏の協力を得ました。

TOEIC L&Rの文法学習は「狭く深く」
TOEIC L&R の Part 5 は、毎回ほぼ同じタイプの問題が出題されるのが大きな特徴です。したがって、特に文法問題は、特定の出題範囲に絞り、「狭く深く」勉強することで、効率的にスコアを伸ばせます。実際、私が普段指導している専門学校でも、短期間に文法のスコア(スコアシートの右下の数字)を飛躍的に伸ばす生徒は多数 います。スコア100(ノーミス)の生徒も珍しくありません。

1問題の解き方
《品詞問題》《動詞問題》といった問題タイプ別に、解き方の基本を学びます。
2トレーニング
実際に問題を解きながら、各問題タイプの特徴を理解し、解き方を習得します。
3実戦問題 同タイプの問題を大量に解くことで、速く正確に解答する力を養います。ここまでの流れを、問題タイプ別に第7章まで繰り返します。
4 文法模試(30問×13セット) 最後に総仕上げの模試を13 セット用意しています。

◎本書の使い方 第1章の《品詞問題》から順番に解くのが基本ですが、苦手な文法項目に先に取り 組みたい方は、必ずしも第1章から解く必要はありません。 くわしい解説が不要な上級者や、TOEIC ファンの方は、いきなり別冊の「文法問 題 1000本ノック!」に挑戦し、間違えた問題や不確かな部分のみ該当箇所の解説 や和訳を参照する、という使い方も効率的でしょう。 一般読者の方は、1回目は第1章から順番に解き、2回目以降は苦手な文法項目に 重点的に取り組む、といった使い方がオススメです。

○対象者 本書は、高校基礎レベルの文法や基本単語を理解できている方が、大量の問題演 習を通じてスコアアップを目指すためのものです。TOEIC L&R スコアで、少なく とも 500点以上を取得されている方を対象としています。
基本文法や単語に不安のある方は、まずは基礎固めをされることをオススメします。 基礎体力なしに 1000本ノックに挑むのは無謀です。オススメの文法書や Part 5対 策書を p. 246 に掲載していますので、そちらもご参照ください。
野球の1000本ノックのように、本書の約1000問を解き終えれば、どんな打球(文 法問題)が来ても対応できるしっかりした基本姿勢が身につくはずです。1000問や り抜くのは決して楽ではありませんが、フルマラソンのように、完走した人にしか わからない充実感と、成長した自分がきっとゴールの先に待っています。

本書は第1章から第7章まではPart5の文法問題に出題される問題タイプ別に 学習し、そのあと、文法問題だけで構成された模試(各30問× 13 セット)に挑戦 します。

TOEIC® L&Rテストの概要

I TOEIC® L&R テストとは?
TOEIC(トイック/トーイック)は、Test of English for International Communication の略称で、アメリカにある世界最大の教育研究機関 Educational Testing Service が 制作したテストです。日本では一般財団法人 国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協 会(IIBC) がライセンスを受けて実施しています。 現在のところ、TOEIC には以下の3種類のテストがラインナップされています。

1 TOEIC® Listening and Reading F2
1979年開始。「聞く」と「読む」英語力を測定するテスト。本書で取り扱っているのは、 このテストの Part 5。
2 TOEIC® Speaking and Writing =ZE 2006年開始。「話す」と「書く」英語力を測定するテスト。
3 TOEIC BRIDGE® テスト
2001年開始。「聞く」と「読む」英語力を測定する。1よりも易しく、初中級者向けのテスト。
これまで「TOEIC」あるいは「TOEIC テスト」と呼ぶ場合には、1のことを指していました(最初に始まったので)。しかし、2016年8月より、その正式名称が TOEIC Listening and Readingに変更されました。本書では、基本的に略称の「TOEIC L&R」を用いています。
その TOEIC L&R ですが、楽天株式会社やユニクロ(株式会社ファーストリテイリング)など著名企業が、全社員に一定スコアの獲得を義務づけるなど、ビジネス英語運用能力を測る基準として定着しています。
日本での受験者数は、2015年度に過去最高の255万人を記録。2018年度は少し減って、245 万人となっています。

2スコアについて
TOEIC L&R には受験級というものはなく、したがって合否判定も行われません。 アストの評価は、リスニング5~495 点、リーディング5~495点、トータル10~990点のスコアで行われます。
そのスコアですが、試験日から30日以内に郵送される、「公式認定証」に記載されています。インターネットで受験申込をし、「テスト結果インターネット表示」を「利用する」を選んでいれば、公式認定証よりも早く、ウェブ上でスコアを確認することが可能です。
日本の平均点は、2018年度(全10回) の公開テストで、580点です。はじめて受験する 人にとっては、600点突破がひとつの目標になるでしょうね。

3問題構成について
TOEIC L&Rはリスニングとリーディング、2つのセクションに分かれており、解答はすべてマークシートで行います。
所要時間は2時間で、問題数は 200問! 浴びるように英語を聞いて、読んで、問題に答えなければいけません。英語を理解する力に加え、情報を素早く、的確に処理する能力が問われます。本書で取り扱う Part 5 は特に、高速処理が重要となるパートです。

4公開テスト実施日・実施会場
公開テストは、現在、年 10回(2月・8月を除く各月)実施されています。ちなみに《公 開テスト〉というのは、個人で申し込み、受験をするテストのことで、これとは別 に企業や学校など、団体で受験をする《IPテスト》というものがあります。IPテス トは、公開テストとは別に、申込団体の都合に合わせて、随時実施されます。
公開テストは、全国80 都市での受験が可能ですが、受験地ごとに実施回が異なり ます。IIBC の公式サイト(http://www.libc-global.org/)に、「受験地別スケジュール」 が掲載されているので、そちらで確認してください。 ※ 2020 年度は東京オリンピック・パラリンピックの影響でスケジュールが不規則です。上記公式サイトでご確認 ください。

5受験料（2020年2月現在/受験料は変更される可能性があります)
受験料は 2020年4月の実施回より、6,490円(税込)です。ただし、〈インターネッ ト申込〉を行うと、1年後の同月から3カ月間に実施される公開テストのうち1回 の受験料が5,846円(税込)になる「リピート受験割引サービス」があります。

6 申込方法
公開テストへの申込方法はO《インターネット申込)、2《コンビニ端末申込》の2 種類があります。ただし、2については 2020年5月の実施回をもって終了となります。
1《インターネット申込》
公式サイト(http://www.iibc-global.org/)で会員登録(無料)をし、ネット上で申し込 みます。支払い方法は「クレジットカード」、「コンビニ支払い」、「楽天ID決済」の3種類。
2《コンビニ端末申込》 セブン – イレブン、ローソン、ミニストップ、ファミリーマートに設置されている情報 端末を使って、申し込みます(2020年5月の実施回までで終了)。
ウェブ上でのスコア確認や、「リピート受験割引サービス」、「楽天ID決済」(楽天のポイント を利用可能)など、特典が多い1の申込方法 がオススメです。

試験当日必要なものリスト
受験票
・写真の貼付と署名欄への記入を忘れないこと。
・写真の大きさは、4×3 cm。白黒でも可。
本人確認書類
・写真付きの身分証明書。運転免許証、パスポート、学生証、住民基本台帳カード、外国人登録証明書、在留カードなど。
腕時計
・会場には時計がない場合も多いので必ず用意。携帯電話 を時計代わりに使うことはできません。
鉛筆2~3本
・マークのしやすさから、鉛筆のほうがオススメ。必ず複数本持参すること。

Part5(短文穴埋め問題)の全体像)
■ Part 5の出題パターン
TOEIC L&R の Part 5は、毎回ほぼ同じタイプの問題で構成されているのが大き な特徴です。新形式移行後も問題構成に大きな変化は見られません。たとえは、 私が受験した 2016 ~ 17 年の TOEIC L&R 公開テストの平均的な問題構成は以下 の通りです(数字は、私が毎回受験後に記憶を頼りにまとめたもので、公式データ ではありません)。

もちろん、回によって《代名詞問題》が出題されなかったり、《関係詞問題》が3問 出たり、といった多少の違いはありますが、この出題傾向から大きく逸脱すること はありません。
TOEIC L&R の Part 5で出題される英文は、外国で暮らすビジネスパーソンが日常的に目にするものばかりです。自分の言いたいことを相手に簡潔に伝えるのがビジネス文書の基本ですから、複雑な構文や難解な文法事項が出題されないのはある意味当然といえます。

また、問題制作者側の立場に立つと、問題の種類によって受験者に有利不利が出 ないよう、問題の難易度を毎回一定に保つ必要があります。
こうした理由により、Part 5の出題内容は毎回ほぼ同じなのです。よって、この出題範囲に絞って集中的に勉強すれば、効率的にスコアを伸ばすことが可能です。

本書では、私の過去の受験経験をベースに、TOEIC L&R に精通しているネイティ ブの協力を得て、TOEIC L&R で出題される文法問題のみを1049問収録しました。
この1049問で、Part5で出題される文法事項は網羅していると断言できます。 い、ボロボロになるまで本書を何度も繰り返し解き、スコアアップにお役立てください。

2 Part 5の解答ペース
TOEIC L&R のリーディングセクションの制限時間は 75分です。このうち、Part 7 の長文読解問題に 54分程度時間を残すのが理想的なペース配分です。そのために は、Part 5・6を以下のように約20分で高速処理する必要があります。
Part 5 (30問):10分(1問 20秒)
Part 6(16問):8分(1問30秒)
Part 7(54問):54分(1問60秒)

新形式移行後は、Part 6・7の問題数が増え、それぞれのパートに難易度の高い問 題が導入されました。高得点を狙うには、Part 5 を高速かつ正確に処理するスキル が不可欠です。
本書に取り組む際も、《1問20 秒〉または《3問1分〉のペースで時間を計って解く ようにしてください。慣れないうちは1問 20 秒で解くのは大変ですが、英語力を 伸ばしつつ、解答のコツをつかめば次第にテンポよく解けるようになります。

3 Part5の解き方
Part5には、空所の前後だけ読めば解ける問題もあります。ただし、部分読みで解く癖が付くと、本試験でのケアレスミスにつながる恐れがありますし、解けずに結 局文頭から読み直すことになれば、時間をロスしてしまいます。
問題文はほとんどが15~20 語程度の長さ(長くても25 語程度)です。文頭から 読み進め、徐々に制限時間内で解ける問題数を増やすことをお勧めします。

教育関連書籍を出版している学研プラスの本で、中学英語を1度で学び直したい人にオススメの本です。理由は、英語の基本中であるbe同士や3人称から学ぶことができるので、英語が全くできない人でも理解できるからです。イラストが挿入されていたり、チャプターの最後に練習問題があります。現在完了形、過去分詞、関係代名詞など、意外と理解できていない部分もわかりやすく説明されているので、英語がある程度わかる人にもオススメできます。この本を読めば、英語がさっぱりわからない人でも簡単な英会話をすることが可能でしょう。

スーパーステップ くもんの中学英文法

公文式で有名なくもん出版から発行されている本書は、中学校で教わる範囲の英文法を学ぶことができます。英会話で文法を意識して話そうとすると、頭の中で考えすぎてしまい、テンポよく会話することができません。ですので、英文法はすぐに頭の中から引き出せるようにしておく必要があります。中学生を対象とした本書では、難しいことは書いていませんので、基礎の文法を理解するのが簡単です。本書はルールブックのように何度も読み返しましょう。頭の中に定着すれば、言いたい表現を簡単に引き出せるようになります。英文法を理解しているか怪しい人は、本書から始めるといいと思います。

上記の書籍と同じく、くもん出版から発行されている本です。中学1年生で習う範囲の文法が収録されています。文法の説明よりも練習問題の方が多いので、問題を解きながら覚えたいという人に適しています。これまであまり英語に触れて来ないで、これから英語を学びなおそうと考えている人は取り組むといいでしょう。本書に取り組めば、着実に英文法の知識を身につけ、英語に対して興味を持つことができると思います。

大学受験の予備校である東進ハイスクールが出版している書籍です。著者は同校の英語講師である大岩秀樹氏、苦手だった英語を得意科目にすることで定評があります。英文法の基礎と言いつつも、高校で習う範囲も収録されています。中学レベルの英語は一通り理解できる人に向いていると思います。カラーでわかりやすいですが、例文が少ないため、例題のある参考書の補助的な使い方がいいと思います。本書を理解できれば、簡単な英文を作ることができるようになるでしょう。

東進ハイスクールと並び、予備校で有名な駿台から出版されている英単語帳です。シス単と言えば、例文を理解して英単語を学習する形式なので、文章と単語の意味を紐づけて覚えることができます。中学英語の文法を一通り理解できた人は、この単語帳を使ってボキャブラリーを増やしていくとレベルアップできます。ボキャブラリーの量が増えれば、どんなシーンでも英語で対応することができるようになります。

中学英語学習本のまとめ

仕事上で英語を使うことになり、中学英語から再学習する人が多くなりました。そのため、大人でもわかりやすい内容の本が多く出版されています。TOEICの前段階としての基礎文法を学ぶと良いと思います。英語を再学習する目的は人それでしょうが、まずは基礎から始めることをオススメします。

]]> TOEIC®のリーディングパート5と6では文法力が問われる。出題範囲は基本的な単元からしか出ないので、基礎文法力を鍛えておきたい。また、パート7につなげるためにパート5と6は解答スピードの対策もしたい。そこで社会人から英語学習を始めて、TOEIC®910点や英検1級などを取得した市川基寿氏にパート5と6の学習方法と対策法を教えてもらった。

パート5はすべての基本が詰まったパート

ここでは、TOEIC® L&Rのリーディングパートを扱っていきます。中でもパート5は、「すべての基本が詰まったパート」と言っても過言ではありません。このパートが満足に解けないようであれば、高スコアを取得することはできません。逆を言えば、パート5を得意分野にすることで英文の構造を把握でき、英語の基礎を抑えられるようになります。

ですから、英語初心者はパート5の対策をはじめに取り組み、且つ最も時間を割くべきパートでもあると思います。それでは、具体的にパート5の問題を見ていきましょう。パート5は全30問ありますが、問題のパターンは様々です。問題パターンを見分ける時のコツは、「選択肢を見比べる」です。では、実際の問題を見ていきましょう。

【タイプ1（品詞）】
問1：ABC electronics’ staff have ______ of current system.
（A）know
（B）known
（C）knowledge
（D）knowledgeable

選択肢を見ると「know」の品詞の変化形が並んでいます。このように単語の意味というよりは、文の構造に最適な品詞を選択する問題が出てきます。そのため、単語を覚える際には品詞にも気を配らなければなりません。次に文構造を見ると、空欄の直前は「have」という動詞、直後は「of」という前置詞です。すなわち「動詞（　　）前置詞」に何を入れるべきかが問われているのです。

ここでは「have」が他動詞なので目的語となる名詞が必要です。また、名詞をおけば直後の「of」とも「A of B（BのA）」という形で意味が通ります。このタイプの問題を解くのに必要なことは、文構造の把握と文中での各品詞の役割についての理解です。品詞問題は文法の中でも一番の基礎で、且つ頻出度も高いので、英文の構成要素の知識を身につけたら絶対に解けるようにして下さい。

【タイプ2（動詞）】
問2：ABC’s chief of staff meets regularly with staff to ensure that procedures ______ correctly.
（A）to be performed
（B）would have performed
（C）had been performed
（D）are being performed

この問題も問1と同じく選択肢の「perform」の形が違うだけではなく、時制や態もそれぞれ異なっています。この手の問題で特に必要となる知識は、時制や態や分詞です。動詞問題は、まず「態」を判別します。空欄に入るべき動詞は、直前の名詞「procedures」にかかるので受動態となるべきです。選択肢の中でこの条件に当てはまるのは（A）と（C）、（D）です。

次に判断材料して時制を見てみると、主節の動詞「meets」が現在形なので従属節の空欄も現在形のはずです。また、「ensure that」の「that」が接続詞の役割を果たすので、「that」以下にはSVと完全文の要素が揃っている必要があります。それらを考慮に入れるといずれの条件も満たすのは（D）です。

【タイプ3（関係詞）】
問3：ABC Properties has just signed a lease agreement with the law firm ______ offices are on the first floor.
（A）how
（B）what
（C）whose
（D）wherever

次のパターンは「文構造」と「接続詞・関係詞」の知識がないと解けない問題で、文法タイプの中では最難関レベルかと思います。600点を目指す上では、他の分野で得点できるなら無理に解く必要はないかもしれません。選択肢を見るといずれも接続詞や関係詞です。この手のタイプは、他動詞の目的語として機能する「名詞節」か、名詞を修飾する「形容詞節」なのかを判別します。

空欄の直前までで文は完結しているので、以降は直前の「the law firm」を説明するオマケみたいなものです。また、空欄の後を見ると、文の要素が全て揃っている完全文です。あとは文意を汲み取りながら選択肢を考えると、関係代名詞の目的格として機能する（C）が正解とわかります。

【タイプ4（語彙）】
問4：The XYZ corporation is committed to keeping costs ______ for its certification programs.
（A）affordable
（B）permitted

語彙を問うタイプは、文脈に最適な選択肢を選ぶ問題であり、選択肢の品詞が全て同じになります。ここでは（A）affordable（手頃な価格の）が文意に最も合い正解となります。日頃からただ単語の意味だけを身につけるのではなく、「単語がどのように使われるか」、「どの単語とよく使われるか（コロケーション）」をたくさん覚えることで正解に近づきます。

これまで見てきたように、形式としては短文の空所補充ですが、さまざまな知識が求められるのがパート5の特徴です。解説を読んでもわからない文法用語があるのであれば、必要に応じて高校英語や中学生語まで遡り、理解することが英語の基礎を作ることに繋がります。パート5の正答率が安定せずしてリーディングのスコアは望めませんので、基礎に不安の方はぜひ一度、基礎知識を固めることをオススメします。

パート5の基本を押さえ、何回か問題演習をして正答率が8割くらいに安定したら、今度は数をとにかくこなします。オススメの問題集は、『TOEIC L&Rテスト 文法問題 でる1000問』です。この問題集を数週することにより、TOEIC®で頻出する文法問題をあらかた抑えることができます。ここまでくれば、パート5に関しては半分攻略したと言っても同然です。残りの半分はスピードです。30問をいかに早く解くかによって、パート6と7に充てられる時間が変わってきます。ですので、初心者の方は、1問あたり30秒以内を目安に解けるようチャレンジしてください。正答率とスピードが伴えばパート5が大きな得点源になるでしょう。

パート5では30問出題されるが、あらかじめ問題パターンを抑えておけば解答時間を短縮できる

パート6は「パート5の知識＋α」

続いてパート6です。長文の1題中に空所が4箇所あり、それぞれの空所を埋める問題です。小問の4題中3題は、パート5のような文法や文脈を問われる問題で、もう1題は文脈に合致する1文を補う問題です。

つまり、パート6はパート5の延長線でありパート7の前哨戦です。その上で文脈を辿りながら、問題が解けるかを試されています。パート5との決定的な違いは、正解のヒントが空欄を含む文のみに収まらないということ。そして、選択肢に「Therefore」や「However」、「Moreover」など前後の文脈の論理展開を読み解く必要があることの力を要求されます。

ですから、決して空欄の前後や文だけを読んで解かず、1文目から読み進めていくことが必要となります。このとき、1文ずつ訳していくのではなく、次の文との流れを意識して読むようにしてください。そうすれば、次第に自然と文を追いながら読めるようになるので、最初のうちは妥協しないようにしましょう。

ここまででパート5と6の対策を伝えましたが、リスニングパートと違ってリーディングパートは75分間内にどの順番で問題を解こうが受験者の自由です。言い換えれば、このパートでハイスコアを取りたいのならば、自らの実力に見合った戦略が必要となります。このパートで多くの受験者の悩みのタネとなるのは、「最後まで解き切れないこと」だと思います。

しかし、私は「最後まで解ききれなくても良い」と考えています。それは経験上、最後までリーディングパートを解き切れるのは、900点を安定して取れるレベルになってからだと思います。では、初心者はどのような戦略を立てるべきかというと、捨てる問題は捨て、解ける問題は確実に解くという「正答率重視」の戦略を勧めます。100問解答して、50問しか合っていなかったよりも、100問あるのであれば20問を捨て、残りの80問の内60問正解する方がスコアは高いのです。

このように、初心者のうちは敢えて全問勝負に挑むのではなく、拾うべき問題は確実に正解するスタンスを取り、余裕が出てきたら全問解答を目指すのです。リーディングの学習をする上で、まずはパート5で絶対に落とせない問題を確実に正解する力を付けてください。ここでどれだけ基礎を身に付けられるかが、今後のスコアの伸びが左右されます。

いよいよ勉強スタート！ その前に一番大事なのは？

今回からTOEIC®で600点を取るためには、具体的に「どのように勉強すればいいのか」を中心に紹介します。まず、TOEIC® L&Rテストに求められる技能は、「リーディング（読む）」と「リスニング（聞く）」なわけですが、いきなり問題集を買い込んで解き始めるのがいいと思いますか？ 私の答えは「ノー」です。たしかに問題演習は大事ですが、まずは自分自身が問題演習をするのに適したレベルに達しているかをチェックしなければなりません。

では、何をチェックすべきなのかというと、基本的な「語彙力」と「文法力」があるかを見極めます。考えてみれば当たり前ですが、基本的な単語や文法は算数でいう九九のようなもの。九九を知らずして掛け算・割り算を行うのは極めて困難なように、最低限の単語や文法を知らずして勉強を進めていくのは非効率なのです。図1が示すとおり、まずは4技能全ての基盤とも言える「単語」と「文法」を抑えましょう。

自分の単語力を知るために索引をコピーして知っている単語のみをマーキングし計算しよう

まずは任意の単語帳を準備しますが、私がオススメするのはスコアのレベル別に分かれている朝日新聞出版社の『TOEIC L&R TEST 出る単特急 金のフレーズ』です。単語を覚える上で最初にやることは単語帳の索引をコピーすることです。そして、600点を目指しているのであれば、600点レベルまでの単語をひたすらマークします。このとき、迷うことなく瞬時に日本語の意味が分かる単語のみをマークします。一通りチェックを終えたら、「知っている語彙数÷600点レベルの総単語数×100＝認識率」の計算式に数字を代入します。

認識率が80％以上ならば、残りの20％の単語を覚えつつ次のステップに進めても良いと思います。逆に、TOEICを受ける上でベースとなるレベルの単語が2割以上分からないとなると、恐らく文章を読んでいても1文につき2～3語は分からないのではないでしょうか。そうすると、「あ、この単語分からないな。調べないと！」といちいち学習がストップしてしまいます。これでは効率が悪いので、まずは必要最低限の単語を先手必勝で覚えてしまう必要があるのです。

単語の覚える方法は反復すること

それでは、単語の覚え方に入りましょう。といっても、「なかなか単語が覚えられない」というのは英語学習者ならば誰もが通る道です。そこで個々人がいろいろ工夫するわけですが、あなたはどのように単語を覚えていますか？ よくありがちなのが紙とペンを用意して、1単語・10回ずつ紙に書きながら覚えるというような覚え方です。私はこの方法はおすすめしません。

なぜなら、TOEIC® L&Rテストにおいて自分で単語を書くことはありませんし、私自身中学生の頃に書いて覚えるという方法で単語を覚えようと試みましたが、いつしか「書く事」が目的になってしまい、肝心の意味がほとんど覚えられなかったという実体験があるからです。では、どう覚えるか、そのキーワードは「反復」と「大量」と「刷り込み」の3点です。

もし、400語の単語を1週間で覚える必要があるという状況で、あなたは次のどちらの方法をとりますか？ ひとつは毎日400語を覚える方法（以下、方法A）。もうひとつは新出単語を60語ずつ覚え、2日目以降は前日の60語を復習もする方法です（以下、方法B）。この2択の場合、私なら断然のAの方法を勧めます。Aの方法であれば、毎日400語を覚えることにより7日間で7回同じ単語を目にすることになります。

一方、Bの方法は、翌日こそ前日の単語を振り返りますが、次にその単語を目にするのは6日後になってしまうため、せっかく覚えた単語を忘れてしまうと考えられます。英単語は“毎日”目にするからこそ、脳内に単語が刷り込まれていくわけです。ですから、新しい単語を覚える際には、一定期間、毎日同じ単語を目にするという反復が大事になります。また経験上、1日に数語ずつチマチマ覚えるよりも、一度に100語単位でリズミカルに覚えた方が定着する気がします。

AとBの覚え方の場合、一度に100語単位で取り組む覚え方の方が定着しやすいと感じる

こんな事を言うと、1日に100語も覚えられませんという声が聞こえてきそうですが、1回で全て完璧に覚えるわけではなく、何周も繰り返すことによって定着させるので、最初はできなくて当然です。また、最終的に一瞬で意味が思い浮かぶレベルを目指すため、1単語あたり2〜3秒で覚えようとするのがコツです。そのため100語取り組んだとしても、せいぜい5分程度と短時間なので、スキマ時間で終わらせられます。

単語を覚えるとき、私はアプリのリスニングの機能使って、視覚と聴覚で単語の発音を認識する方法や歩き回りながらブツブツと単語を唱えるという方法など五感を駆使しつつ、ボキャビルを一時期インテンシブに行いました。その結果、英検1級レベルのハイレベルな語彙2,100語を2週間という短時間で認識語彙へとインプットできました。

単語を覚える上で重要なのは記憶力のよさではありません。地味で単調な作業ですが、地道に単語を覚る努力をするかしないかです。もし、あなたがTOEIC® L&Rテストで600点を取りたいのならば、単語を覚えるという作業は避けては通れません。最初は辛いですが、毎日コツコツ覚えることで力となってくれるでしょう。

まずは速読よりも正確に読めるか

単語と並んで英語の基礎知識として必須である文法の覚え方を話しましょう。単語がわかっても基本的な文法がわからなければ、正確に読解できる保証はありません。試しに次の2文を正確に解釈できるか試してみてください。

【1】I found this book easy.
【2】I found this book easily.

単語は中学2年生なら知っている単語です。つまり、この文が正確に解釈できないならば、語彙力の問題ではないということ。よく、フィーリングで単語の意味を繋ぎ合わせて読めればいいという人もいますが、それでは正確な読解ができずスコアは伸び悩むこと必至です。上述の文を以下のように訳すことができましたか。

【1】私はこの本が簡単だと分かった（SVOCの第5文型）。
【2】私はこの本を簡単に見つけた（SVOの第3文型）。

単語としては「easy」か「easily」の違いだけですが、それぞれの単語の品詞が異なるので、文中での役割も変わり、全体の文意が大きく変わってしまうのです。しかし、何も文法といっても、大学入試のような重箱の隅を突くレベルの文法を勉強する必要はありません。あくまでも、英語を構造的に捉えた必要最低限のルールを学べばよいのです。この種の参考書はTOEIC®向けの参考書よりも、高校生向けの参考書の方がリーズナブル且つ質が高いので、書籍を購入する際は参考にしてください。例えば、『英文読解入門基本はここだ！』（代々木ライブラリー）のような英文解釈のベーシックな参考書を1週間で2～3周して、徹底的に読解のルールを身につけましょう。

最後に、「TOEIC®のリーディングは最後まで解き終わらない」という読解スピードの問題が挙げられますが、600点を目指す人にとって読解スピードまで気にしている余裕はありませんし、そもそも最後まで解き切れなくても達することができます。

そのため、むやみに速く読むことを意識することで返り読みをしてしまうのではなく、正確に文意を解釈することこそ、初心者が取り組むべき課題です。まずは、地に足をつけて自分の英文読解の力を見直してみましょう。

動名詞と関係代名詞の違いを知ろう

今回は、文法の中でも動名詞について解説していきます。動名詞は関係詞の省略と混同しやすく、判別ができないことがあります。動名詞と関係代名詞では、全く訳が変わってしまうため正確な判断が必要です。逆に、両者の違いを見分けることができるようになれば、読解力が大幅に伸びてきます。まずは、動名詞の特性を解説していきます。

動名詞とは動詞の末尾に「〜ing」をつけることで、名詞の機能を持った品詞です。動詞を名詞にするので、日本語訳であれば「〜すること」となります。例えば、「seeing」であれば、「見ること」と訳します。特性については、名詞と同じで主語と目的語、補語になる機能を持っています。

【主語】
“Reading” books is very important. （本を“読むこと”はとても重要だ）

【目的語】
I started “learning” history yesterday. （私は昨日歴史を“学ぶこと”を始めました）

【補語】
My hobby is “learning” history. （私の趣味は歴史を“学ぶこと”です）

上記のように動名詞は主語・目的語・補語の役割を果たします。そのことを踏まえた上で、ここからは本題となる関係代名詞の省略との違いについて説明します。まずは次の例文を見てください。

【例文】
I like a cat running in the park.

上の例文は、どのように訳しますか？ 動名詞と関係代名詞の省略を知っている人は、すでに「like」という動詞が文中に存在しているため、「running」が動詞ではないと判断できます。もし、「running」を動名詞と考えると、「私は猫が走っていることが好きだ」と訳してしまうかもしれません。確かに名詞が連続すると、前の名詞が形容詞としての働きを持つ名詞の形容詞的用法があります。

もちろん、「a cat running」を「猫の走ること」と訳すこともできます。しかし、「走っていること」という動名詞は可算名詞ではないため、「cat」の前に「a」という不定冠詞があることがおかしい事に気がつきます。

一方で、関係代名詞の省略形であった場合は、どのように訳すことができるでしょう？ 例文に省略された関係代名詞を補うと「I like a cat which is running in the park.」となります。このように省略形を補うと訳しやすくなります。正確な和訳は「私は公園で走っている猫が好きだ」となります。省略されている部分を補ってあげないと、役が雑になってしまい、綺麗に訳せなくなってしまいます。

ここでも、TOEIC®の文法で非常に大切な箇所をカバーしました。関係代名詞の省略と動名詞の違い自体を問う文法問題は出てきませんが、全てのパートの文中に出現する可能性があるので、理解している必要があります。また、TOEIC®以外の英語試験や英語の雑誌、論文にも出てくる表現ですので、非常に重要な知識です。本記事で活用を理解して、いつでも引き出せる文法知識にしましょう。

関係代名詞はTOEIC®の中で最重要の文法

今回は関係代名詞について解説していきます。TOEIC®L&Rテストでは、頻出の文法となっており、文法問題のパート5だけでなく、パート6やパート7の文中にも多用されます。TOEIC®の文法の中では最重要項目といっても過言ではないため、関係代名詞の特性を確認していきましょう。

【関係代名詞の基本特性】
関係代名詞（主にwhich, who, that）が名詞の直後につき、直前の名詞の補足説明をする役割を担っております。実際の使い方を下記の例に見ていきましょう。

［1］I saw the cat which was white and sitting next to the dog.
（私はその犬の隣に座っていた白い猫を見た）

［2］I saw the cat that was white and sitting next to the dog.
（私はその犬の隣に座っていた白い猫を見た）

［3］I saw a woman who was running on the street yesterday.
（私は昨日通りを走っている女性を見た）

まずは、［1］と［2］の例文で関係代名詞の役割を説明します。一度、例文［1］を「I saw the cat.」と「The cat was white and sitting next to the dog.」に分割して接続詞andで繋げ直すと、「I saw the cat, and it was white and sitting next to the dog.」とすることができます。この「and, it」を「which」もしくは「that」で置き換えた文章が［1］と［2］です。

つまり、「接続詞+代名詞」の役割を果たすのが関係代名詞です。「which」もしくは「that」は「モノ」の代名詞として用い、「人」を表すときは「who」を用います。

ここで［1］と［2］の英文は、どこが違うのかと疑問に思う人もいることでしょう。文章自体も「which」と「that」が異なるだけで和訳は同じですが、両者には歴然とした違いがあります。それは、「制限用法」では「that」を使い、「非制限用法」では「which」を使うということです。

簡単に説明すると、犬の横に何匹か猫がいて、自分が見た猫を特定したいとき（範囲を制限）には制限用法の「that」を使います。一方で、犬の横に猫が1匹しかいない場合は、範囲を制限しなくても特定できるので非制限用法となり、関係代名詞の「which」を使用します。

それでは基本を押さえたところで、本題に入りましょう。関係代名詞で間違いやすいところに、関係代名詞自体を省略できるという点があります。実際に当学院の受講生も英文の意訳をする際に、関係代名詞の省略に困惑することが多いです。それでは、関係代名詞が省略できる代表的な2つの例を解説します。

【1】関係代名詞が目的格のとき
・I like the cat which I saw yesterday.（私は昨日見た猫が好きです）
この文では、「the cat」は、関係詞節「which I saw yesterday」の「I saw」の目的語になっています。このときの「which」は、関係代名詞の目的格です。このように目的格として機能する場合、「I like the cat I saw yesterday.」と関係詞を省略することができます。

【2】関係代名詞+be動詞のとき
・I had seen the cat which was found in the park. （私は公園で見つかった猫を見たことがある）
このような例文が頻繁にTOEIC®の問題に出てきますので確認しましょう。この場合、「I saw the cat found in the park.」と書き換えることができます。書き換えた文には、二つの動詞が一つの文の中に存在するため、主語に対する動詞が判別できなくなり、和訳するときにおかしくなってしまう危険性が出てきます。

基本を押さえたところで、次の問題を見てください。

問題：All vegetables sold in Mam-mart are organic and ______ by Department of Agriculture.
（A）certificate
（B）certified
（C）which are certified
（D）certification

まずは主語を確認してみます。間違いやすいですが、問題文の主語は「All vegetable」ではなく、「All vegetables sold in Mam-mart」です。また、主語に対する動詞は「are」です。「sold」を主語に対する動詞だと考えてしまうと、和訳がおかしくなってしまい、解答に時間がかかります。ここでの動詞「are」は、「organic」と空欄部分に並列でかかっています。そのため、正解は受け身の動詞である（B）certifiedになります。

和訳：Mam-martで売られているすべての野菜は全て有機野菜で、農務省から認証を受けています。

関係代名詞はTOEIC®にも頻繁に登場する文法です。基本的な用法はもちろんですが、省略されるパターンも覚えていないとテスト本番で解答する時間がかかってしまいます。また、文法問題だけでなく、長文読解でもスムーズに読み進めていくためには必要不可欠な知識となります。ですので、今一度、関係代名詞について理解を深めていきましょう。

比較には比較級と最上級の2つが存在する

ここでは、比較について解説していきます。TOEIC®L&Rの中では、リーディング問題として出題されることは稀ですが、長文のパッセージ内で問題の答えを導き出すときに必要であったり、リスニングパートの選択肢に登場したりするので重要な文法表現の一つです。

比較の英語表現には大きく分けて「比較級」と「最上級」の2つがあります。文字通りに比較によって、複数の人や物の程度や度合いの差を表現するときに「比較級」を用い、最上や最下を表現する際には「最上級」を用います。

比較級は、比較表現の対象となる形容詞や副詞の語尾に「-er」、2音節以上の単語には語頭に「more」を付けます。「-er」と「more」の区別に関しては、各形容詞や副詞の比較級に出会ったときに適切な表現を覚えていくことをオススメします。また、比較級を使った文は次のような形を取ることが一般的です。

「名詞（主語）＋動詞＋比較形容詞＋than＋名詞（目的語）」

【比較級を使った例文】
（1）I can run faster than he. （私は彼よりも早く走れる）
（2）This task is more important than that one. （この仕事はその仕事よりも重要だ）

（1）の文では「he」の部分が「him」ではないかと思う人もいるかと思います。ですが、「than」は接続詞（接続詞はS＋Vを伴う品詞）なので、「than」の後ろには「he runs」という文が続きます。そのため、例文の「he」は「he runs」を省略した形となります。

（2）も同様に、「that one is」を省略して「that one」という表現をしています。比較級は「比較」の表現で用いられるため、複数の人・物を比較したときは「～よりも」という訳が日本人にとってしっくりくるのではないかと思います。

次に最上級の説明をします。最上級は最大、最小を表現するときに使われますが、比較表現の対象となる形容詞や副詞を「the＋形容詞（副詞）＋est」 や「the＋most＋形容詞（副詞）」とします。「the most」をつける語句は比較級のときに「more」をつける語句と同じです。ここで注意すべき点は、頭に「the」が必ずつくということです。

【最上級を使った例文】
（1）He is the shortest in the room. （彼はその部屋の中で一番背が低い）

どちらの例文も「一番～」と訳すとしっくりくるのではないかと思います。最大・最小を表現するため、比較対象の範囲が記載されている方がわかりやすいです。例えば、（1）の例文では「部屋の中で」という表現をすることで、「部屋」という範囲の中で一番低いことがわかり、（2）の例文では「この店の中で」という表現があるので、「店」という範囲の中で一番値段が高いことがわかります。

それでは以下の問題を見ていきましょう。

問題：Franck Heeler, which is the watch only sold in Harley Clock is ______ expensive than other watches in the shop.
（A）most
（B）more
（C）as
（D）much

ここで注目するべき点は、「than」という接続詞があるということです。「than」が文中にあるということは、比較級が問われている問題だとわかります。たとえ、「Franck Heeler」が店の中で一番高い時計であったとしても、「than」があることによって最大級ではなく、比較級が空欄には入ることとなります。よって、答えは選択肢で唯一の比較級である（B）moreとなります。

比較級は様々な形で文中に出てきますが、基本を押さえておくことが応用表現の理解に繋がります。まずは、本記事で基本を抑えて理解を深めていきましょう。

未来完了形は未来のある時点までに起こった出来事を表現する

今回は未来完了形について解説していきます。未来完了形は、現在完了形や過去完了形と同様に経験、継続、完了を表す3つの用法があり、未来のある時点までに起こった出来事が未来のある時点において効果を成している状態を表す動詞の活用形です。さて、より他の時制との区別を明確にするため未来完了形について下の図を見てください。

未来形、未来完了形、現在完了形のイメージ

前述した通り、未来完了形とは、未来のある時点までに起こった出来事が未来のある時点において効果を成している状態を表します。それでは、以下の2つの例文を見てください。

例文1：The task will have been done by next Saturday. （その仕事は次の土曜日までには終了しているだろう）

例文2：The task will be done by next Saturday. （その仕事は次の土曜日までに終わっています）

例文1と2での特定の時点は来週の土曜日です。例文1では、土曜日の時点までに完了していることを表す未来完了形です。つまり、現在から来週の土曜日までの間でのどこかの時点でその仕事は終わっていて、仕事を終えた状態が来週の土曜日時点まで継続していることを表します。

それに対して例文2では、来週の土曜日時点で終了していることを表しており、その時点のみの話をしています。いつ終わったのかは、文中では関係ありません。ちなみに例題1で使用した未来完了形の用法は「完了」です。では、他の2つの用法の例文を見ていきましょう。

【経験用法】
I will have visited Kyoto twice if we travel there again. （もしもう一度そこを訪れたら、私は京都に2回旅したことになる）

【継続用法】
I will have worked for the company for five years next month. （来月には私はその会社に5年間勤めている）

それでは、未来完了形を使った問題を見ていきましょう。

問題：The president of Italian Fast Cuisine Corporation will be glad when he notices that the company ______ for ten years by tomorrow.

（A）will survive
（B）will be survived
（C）will have survived
（D）survived

この問題でまず注目して欲しいことは、「いつのことを述べている文なのか」ということです。文末に「by tomorrow」という特定の時制があるので、「明日まで」という未来を表す動詞が入ることがわかります。「for ten years」を見る限り、「10年間継続してきた」と表現できる継続用法の完了形が入ることもわかります。よって、（C）will have survivedが答えとなります。

【問題の日本語訳】
Italian Fast Cuisine株式会社の社長は、明日で会社が10年続いたということに気づいたら喜ぶだろう。

ここでは未来完了形を見てきました。なかなかTOEIC®の問題には出てきませんが、完了形の概念を理解するためには大切な活用形の一つです。分かりにくい活用を理解することで、動詞の理解がより深まっていくのがわかると思います。

過去を表す用法の時制とは？

今回は、過去完了形について解説していきます。過去完了形は、現在完了形と同様に他の時制と紛らわしく、苦手とする人が多い分野です。過去完了形について解説していく前に、まずは下記の図を見てください。

過去完了形のイメージ。過去のある時点よりも前から続いている

図のように過去完了形は、過去のある時点より前から過去のある時点まで行為や効果が続いているようなイメージがあります。また、過去完了形を表現するとき、よく過去形で表現してしまう人を見かけます。そこで、過去形と過去完了形の違いについて例文を使って説明します。

【過去形】
You got a mail. （あなたは［ある時点で］メールを受け取りました）
過去形では“メールを受け取った”という事実のみを表す。

【過去完了形】
You had got a mail. （あなたは、過去にメールを受信していました）
過去完了形では、過去のある時点でメールを保持しており、受け取った時点からの効果がある時点まで継続している状態を表す。

過去形と過去完了形ともに、過去にメールを受信していることに変わりありません。しかし、過去形では過去のある一点で受け取ったという行為のみを表していますが、過去完了形では過去のある時点よりもさらに前にメールを受け取っています。これが過去形との違いになります。さらに理解を深めるために、下記の例文を見てみましょう。

【過去形】
You studied math yesterday. （あなたは昨日、数学を勉強していた。）
過去形では、「昨日という時点において勉強していた」という事実のみを表し、それ以前の状態などは一切関係ありません。

【過去完了形】
You had studied math for three hours yesterday. （あなたは昨日、3時間勉強していた。）
過去完了形では、「昨日3時間勉強していた」という、ある時点での話ではなく、3時間という期間勉強していたということがわかります。

さて、過去完了形について他の時制との違いを説明してきましたが、ここからは過去完了形の用法を説明していきます。知っているかもしれませんが、過去完了形には、現在完了形と同様に経験・継続・完了の3つの用法があります。

【経験用法】
I had visited the place once before I met John. （私はジョンと会う前に、その場所に1回訪れたことがあった）

【継続用法】
I had worked for the company for five years before I met John. （私はジョンと会うまでに、その会社に5年間勤めていた）

【完了用法】
I had already done the task before I met John. （私はジョンに会う前に、その仕事を既に終わらせていた）

TOEIC®では、現在完了形と同じく、パート6の内容を見ながら時制を確認する問題で出てきます。それでは、実際に問題を見ていきましょう。

問題：Harvesting Memories, an international trading company with more than 50 subsidiaries, ______ new device to trace every transaction of all the trading before the rival company did.

（A）was introducing
（B）has introduced
（C）to introduce
（D）had introduced

ここで解答のカギとなるのが、発表したのが“いつの時点”のことなのかということです。空欄の後に「ライバルの会社が発表する前」と説明されており、「ライバルが過去にした時より前に、既に導入された状態」であることがわかります。よって、発表は過去より前に完了している状態だということがわかります。つまり、空欄には過去完了形が入ると判断できます。ですので、答えは（D）has introducedになります。そして、ここでの過去完了形の用法は、完了したことを表す「完了用法」でもあります。

このように、過去完了形は過去を現在としたときの現在完了形と同じ働きをします。TOEIC®でも現在完了形と同じ問題で選択肢に登場することがあるので、ここで両方の違いをしっかり理解すれば確実にスコアを上げることができます。
