テーマ：「スマートフォンは時間を浪費すると思うか？ それとも節約できるか？」
2016年度の東北大学の前期日程（全学部共通）の英作文には「スマートフォンは時間を無駄にするか？ それとも時間節約になるか？ 会話にはない理由を2つ以上挙げて意見を述べよ」というテーマが出された。会話文を読んでからどちらかの意見を選び、意見を主張する形式の問題。
会話にない理由を2つ以上挙げなければならないので、「直接会話する能力が失われる」や「ゲームをして過ごしている」、「教育系のアプリが使える」などを理由にはできない。最初に自身の主張と理由を述べ、具体例を2つ以上書くという構成にする必要がある。
【解答例（節約すると思う）】

私はスマートフォンが時間を無駄にすると思います。その理由は、簡単にネットにアクセスでき、次々と終わりなく情報がアップロードされるからです。他にやることがあっても、次々に情報が来ることでやめ時を見失い、結果として時間を無駄にしてしまうと思います。また、多くのアプリの通知機能も時間を無駄にする原因だと考えます。たくさんの通知が着て、確認するために時間が失われていきます。スマートフォンを利用しつつ、上手に時間を使うには工夫が必要だと感じます。
