大問4：At many universities nowadays professors often assign group work activities. Do you prefer to work alone or in a group?
2016年度の入試では、「多くの大学で教授たちはグループ活動を課すが、あなたは一人で活動とグループ活動のどちらが好みか。理由とともに100語で述べよ」というテーマが出題された。個人の好みを問う問題だが、書きやすさを優先して選択する。100語程度と字数が指定されているので2つ以上の理由が欲しいところだ。また、具体例などを交えて説明すると文章に説得力を含ませることができる。文章構成は「1.主張」、「2.理由」、「3.具体例」というようにすると書きやすいだろう。

I agree with group activities in university classes assigned by professors. Group activities give you a perspective that you don’t have, and broaden your horizons. 私は大学の授業でのグループ活動に賛成です。グループでの活動は自分の持ってない視点を得ることができ、視野が広がります。視野の広がりは物事をやるにあたって大切なことです。一人では得られません。また、活動に責任感を感じ、一人一人が積極的に取り組み、活動が活発化することにつながります。さらに、将来的に社会に出たり研究をしたりするにも、チームとなって活動することが多くあります。大学のうちに経験できるのは非常に良いことです。

私は大学の授業でのグループ活動に反対です。グループ活動は苦手な人にとって苦痛でしかありません。話し合いにうまく参加できなければ、自分の意見も言えないなど、全員に向けた良い方法ではありません。また、他人に頼って活動をサボろうという人も出てきます。みんなが活発でやる気があればいい方法だとは思いますが、そうでない場合、充実したものにはなり得ないでしょう。私は、努力と成果が比例する一人での活動の方が好きだと感じます。
